[Photos from previous Friday Special Edition Ride]

This is a 17 mile loop, 5 LM/M ride that features the south (easier?) approach to Hicks.

About the Goat: Hicks Road East The Goat is Rated 5, 1050 ft of climbing, Goat Length 5.3 miles, Goat is Almaden Rd @ McKean Rd to summit.

This ride will start at 6 p.m. at the shopping center located at Almaden Expressway and Camden Avenue in San Jose. (This shopping center also has a Safeway and a Starbucks.)

We will ride south along Almaden Expressway, veering right along Almaden Road, through old Almaden up to the reservoir, right on Hicks then all the way over the top and down to Camden. At Camden we will go right and ride back to the shopping center. There is a good Burrito place, Tacos Al Pastor, there and we will have dinner and beer (maybe more?) after the ride.

If you can’t make the ride please come for the social dinner. Though this is an ACTC ride, because it was not listed there will be no goat or mileage credit for the ride.

The Tuesday Whine and Dine road rides for July 29

Quick Spinners

Ted said, “I am planning on doing Aztec Ridge and Harwood via Kennedy. I don’t have a route sheet but the route is very straight forward and I will have a leader and a sweep.” (This is about a six climb)

Mellow Ride – Lollipop Ride

The Lollipop Ride

I am only printing a few route sheets to conserve paper. Riders are encouraged to print your own route sheets before the ride. This is the only way you can be sure to get a route sheet. I am tired of wasting so much paper.

This is not a rated goat

I have never done this ride but it is supposed to be a lot of fun! I will be there but Kathy Buck will be the person leading this ride.

Whine and Dine Ride Reflections

Bicycle ride and jug party:

Tuesday July 22’s whine and dine bicycle ride and jug party photos are here. That was one great Tuesday! The weather was perfect as was the evening. We had three rides and a hike and a long party. I led the mellow ride up Sanborn.

I brought a bottle of jug wine from Preston (that Amy Marsh turned me on to.) Here is an article in the SF Chronicle about the jug wine.

Today we had our Saturday Edition Whine and Dine Ride. This was a lot of fun. About five of us had a pancake breakfast at my house. Then, we rode 42 miles up Croy and then, on the way back, we had a lunch at the Gourmet Mexican Deli at Cottle and Santa Teresa where three more cyclists joined us. It was a lot of fun! Later this evening we went to a party.

WnD Saturday Special Edition Ride: Croy

On Saturday we will be offering a special edition ride. The ride rolls at 8:30 a.m. but the fun will start at 7:30 a.m. at my house. I will put on a pancake feed for all interested whine and diners. After the ride we will be doing about a 42 mile ride up Croy to Uvas Canyon County Park. This is not a listed ACTC ride. So, even though Croy is an ACTC goat you will not get mileage or goat credit. I believe Croy is listed as a 4.

On the way back we will stop at the Mexican Deli, located on Cottle and Santa Teresa for burritos and beer. Sorry, nobody is likely to loose weight on this ride but it should be fun!

Please RSVP to me at s_sloan@mac.com. I will send you links to more information about the ride.

Russian River Rally Whine and Dine Bike Ride

This was the 2008 Whine and Dine ride at the Russian River Rally on July 19, 2008. Last weekend’s Russian River Rally bicycle ride was great. Special thanks to David Adler and Sandy Lorber for driving SAG and doing such a fine job taking care of us on the ride. Thanks to everybody who pitched in food and money for the grub. The bread from Freestone and the cheese from Wisconson were both yummy (not to mention the wine!) Nancy, Pat and Mylo put on a great event and many others pitched in to make it possible. Our ride was a blast, the weather perfect and both wineries said we are welcome to return next year.

Sorry, no captions. Hope you enjoy the photos!

6 LM/M; “Mellow,” are you nuts? Yes…

Be prepared for serious climbing! This is a six, yes a six! This is the one six we do on the mellow ride. It is a very pretty ride and a good workout.

WnD ride to feature large format wine

July 21, 2008

Winery that triple magnum is from

Special for July 22nd

Even if you are not riding tomorrows whine and dine ride, you may want to come to the social time after. Thanks to a good friend I was able to secure a special large format bottle of Dry Creek Valley wine from a very fine award winning winery in the Dry Creek appellation.

This wine is a mixture of  of Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Mourvedre and is the equivalent of a triple (yes, I said triple) magnum. (The actual definition of a “magnum” varies by variety and since this is a blend I don’t know what the formal technical term is for sizing of this format is in the world of wine. It is a bit more than four normal bottles.) This wine has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle and hopefully will be a real treat.

You are my special friends and I want to share it with you to celebrate the fun we have all had together, both on the Tuesday rides and at special events like the Russian River Rally. Please join me in thanking Pat, Nancy, Mylo and all the other people who put together last weekend’s ride.

Kathy Buck on the July 9 Whine and Dine Ride

More photos of great bike rides

Here are more photos from some recent whine and dine bicycle rides:

Tuesday, July 8, 2008
This was a fun ride on a very hot and smoky day. Kathy and Darryl Buck and I did the mellow ride up Hicks.
Friday, July 11, 2008
This was a Friday Special Edition ride. We met in the parking lot at Almaden Expressway and Camden. Cathrine, Chris, Terry and I rode up and over hicks from the New Almaden side. Catherine and I both have Rivendells that are almost the same colors, so we posed with those. After the ride we went out for beer and burritos with Nancy and Sue.
Sunday, July 13, 2008
Another special edition ride. Dave, Dorothy and I went down and rode Mt. Eden/Pierce. It was a great day! After the ride we had lunch at Sweet Peas in Los Gatos. Dorothy had frozen yogurt.

Catherine and Laurel Change a flat

[More Photos Here]

July 15, whine and dine ride

This was a great ride, led by Peggggy, we went up Reynolds then back via Hicks. On the way back Catherine got her first flat. Laurel showed Catherine how to change the flat. She said, “every woman should know how to change a flat tire.” I sat back and documented the event. When it comes to teaching changing flats, Laurel is a great teacher. The academy should recruit her!
