Patrice injured on Saturday club ride
Saturday morning, while descending Tunitas Creek Road, Patrice collided with some uphill riding cyclists who reportedly were riding four abreast blocking the whole road. Patrice managed to stay upright but had a severe cut where her hand had hit an uphill riders brake lever and other injuries requiring stitches. Patrice said, “let everyone know I am okay, but probably won’t be on my bike for at least a week. I am hoping I will be okay to ride the tandem next weekend as we are going to the North West Tandem Rally in McMinnville, OR.”
The Tuesday Whine and Dine rides will still go on as planned.
The Rides are on even if there is smoke!
There will actually be three road routes offered on the two listed rides Tuesday, plus the possible mountain bike option. Folks who do not feel up to the faster/longer rides, or who did these routes last week despite the smoke, can do the “mellow” ride as it offers a different goat complete with hard options! Riders are encouraged to print route sheets before the rides.
Whine and Dine Quick Spinners: July 1, Mt Eden – Pierce with Redwood Gulch Optional
Quick Spinners will be led this week by Steve Sloan
Mt Eden – Pierce – 24 miles, 4LM/M, 1522 Feet of climbing. We will keep to pace. Be prepared for a longer and a bit of a challenging ride.
[Route Sheet Here]
Mt Eden – Pierce with Redwood Gulch Option
Even harder and longer than the option listed above. This is Patrice’s Route that was going to be led last week. Hard Core to the Max!
[Route Sheet Here]
“Mellow” Ride: Kennedy, half Hicks and Shannon
Plus full Hicks and Loma Almaden (not mellow) options!
Shannon/Kennedy and half Hicks, other half Hicks and/or Loma Almaden Optional, 3LM, (5 and 6 M optional), [Route Sheet Here] this is a good ride with very hard options! It can be easy or very hard, depending on how it is ridden. Todays ride will be various paces. You will need to shoot out of the gate to get all of Hicks in before dark. Some of the hard core riders doing this ride may want to do all of Hicks and maybe even Loma Almaden! Note the route sheet lists the climb to the top of Hicks but this days ride “officially” turns around at the switchback where the hard climb starts with the rest of Hicks and Loma Almaden as for credit options. If you want to do the option be prepared for a longer and a a challenging ride and you may want to bring lights. This week you can be both studly and mellow! Plan to do it with a buddy!

The ride is canceled, but if you want to ride, RIDE!
Most people have sent us their information and the overwhelming response is the ride should be canceled. There is a breeze and that usually means the air will clear. But, the breeze is coming from the north, where the current fires are. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is advising residents in areas affected by the smoke to be cautious and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
According to one person, “The current weather patterns are causing smoke from Northern California to collect in our area. We will have varying smoke conditions, depending on weather, for the foreseeable future. Very difficult for Weather Service to predict.” So, we will not be officially leading the rides, but if YOU want to show up and lead the ride here is everything you will need to lead a ride or rides today.

The whine and dine rides will not go as planned. The decision at this point is, should we have no ride at all or a small “baby ride” like the Bullwinkle Ride. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is advising residents in areas affected by the smoke to be cautious and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
The final decision will be made by 3:30pm today.

IMPORTANT UPDATE
Whine and Dine Warriors:
Patrice and I are considering canceling this evening’s Whine and Dine rides due to very bad air quality. It seems like the air is getting worse by the hour. We are trying to get info about where all this smoke is coming from.

Patrice Carney is leading the quick spinners ride. Patrice said, “we will do Mt Eden/Pierce and Redwood Gulch. I have created a route and designated regroups so there will not be anyone riding ahead and leaving people behind unless they are off the front on their own.”

A friend sent this to me. It was posted on a train list:
This month’s meeting of the Central Coast Chapter, NRHS, will be held Friday, June 20, at 8:00 p.m. in the meeting room of the South Bay Historical Railroad Society located at the Santa Clara Caltrain Depot, 1005 Railroad Ave., Santa Clara 95050. Everyone is invited to attend.
Following a brief business meeting, Flimsies founder and Winterail roadie Steve Sloan will give us a look back at railroading three decades ago in his own version of “That ‘70s Show.” While the TV show’s star, Ashton Kutcher, plays a photographer in the latest Nikon ads, Steve is the real deal, having extensively photographed the SP, WP, Santa Fe and many other roads in the years just before the mega-mergers that turned everything into…what it is today. So make it on down to the depot and see what you missed before you were born, or what you remember but never got around to photographing.

The flight home; June 8, 2008
June 8 was the last day of our vacation. We left our hotel at an amazingly early time in the morning. After we cleared security and everything we were waiting to board our flight, Sue said, “hey isn’t that Ray?” Yes it was! Our friend Ray and his girlfriend Judy were on the same flight! They very nicely gave us a ride back from SFO to our home in San Jose.
This means the collection of photos from this vacation are complete and now posted to Flickr. You can now see the whole vacation on Flickr. There are folders for each day of our trip.
